The only deficiency I see with the auto-number is that one cannot use other attributes as part of the field. And it also doesn't seem like one can call this "auto" functionality independently (i.e. getNextSequenceNumber()).
I am going to work on this "gap" so that users can do a lot more with auto-numbers.
