Closing "part" of an Opportunity

Does anyone have experience with handling Opportunities that may close at different times? We might identify that a customer does $50,000 in sales throughout the year, but will purchase multiple times throughout the year. What is the best way to capture the "annual spend" and be able to easily update product line amounts to capture the full year spend as well as individual purchases?

    Thank you!!

    Hi Libby,

I am assuming that you are generating multiple opportunities for one client but want to be able to keep a track of the total spend YTD on the account against forecast spend?  If that is the case a rollup field on the account entity summing closed opportunities in a defined fiscal period should give you a "spend this year" but not sure how this ties in with your "product line amounts"?

Do you also want to know how much of a particular product or line item a specific client has purchased in a given time frame?

    Best,

    Simon

    Hi Libby

We are having a similar debate in my organisation and also in relation to Tenders and phasing of income to Opportunity so nice to see a similar problem :) - thank you!

I'm working on the idea of multiple Orders to Opportunities, so we have 1 x Opportunity for £30k which then has 3 x £10k Orders, each with different delivery dates - that helps us plan for expected income and break down how we've invoiced, I've also added a project commencement field to show when we start the work which potentially is different to when we invoice.  I like Simon West's suggestion of a roll up field on the Account entity to give you a spend per year, might have to try that!

I also like the idea that Orders can give you "straight to purchase options" i.e. you don't need to create an Opportunity when the customer has purchased straight away so again Orders would show me that income as well as Opportunities won.

I've also just deployed forecasting into sandbox to play around with this and see if that can help - I want to see if I can "split" the levels of the Opportunity income out in choosing what I want to commit to the forecast - I'm not even sure I can do this but figure a play in Sandbox will settle that.

    Hope this helps.
