Hi,

I am trying to find out if it is possible to remove a managed component, e.g. a managed field, from a unmanaged solution without having to remove the entity from the solution, and re-adding the wanted components. 

Is that possible?

I think it depends on how the entity was added to the solution.
If Add all assets was selected when it was added, then no - you will have to remove the entity from the solution and add it back with just the required components.
Be sure not to select the 'add required components' box when adding something else - otherwise everything will sneak back in.
