Business Unit Changes pushed to Prod

    Hi all,

I'm currently working on a project that will require us to update business units (creating new, deleting others).  This will ultimately require us to move some users to new business units and review our security roles to ensure they function correctly in the new design.  I'd like to prep this in our development environment so we can test it.

After we've tested and confirmed, are there any tools that will ease the push to our test/production environments?  I know I can push security roles in a solution but I don't know any options to push business units or user/role assignments.  We've looked at using direct SQL updates as an option.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!
    Kyle

Hi @Kyle Hess, we went through this process a few years back when our organisation restructured and it was pretty messy.  My advice would be to look into renaming business units rather than creating new ones so that you don't have to re-assign users, teams, records etc to the new business units.  We couldn't delete the business units as they had records associated with them despite us assigning all the records we thought we're associated with the old business units.  Where possible, I'd also suggest renaming teams, queues rather than deleting and creating new ones.

If you do choose to go down the route of new business units, its worth knowing that you can't import business units into a target environment using the standard import wizard but this forum post suggests using the Configuration Migration Tool in the Dynamics SDK.

Let me know if you want any other information about how we went about creating the new structure and/or the lessons that we learnt from it.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for the advice about renaming/repurposing business units.  After some investigating I realized that one of the XRM Toolbox addins (Data Transporter) I've used before is relevant here.  I've used it to move business units, teams, team/user associations, and team/security associations forward from our Development environment into our Test environment.  It's still messy, to be sure, but easier and less error-prone when you can automate most of the migration.

    Thanks!
    Kyle

Hi @Kyle Hess, no problem, thanks for the update.  There's so many useful XRM Toolbox plugins out, i'll have to take a look at the Data Transporter.

Hope all goes well with the project.
