    Are there other alternatives for editing complex SSRS reports in Dynamics 365 Cloud rather than Visual Studio SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) 2015?

    Dynamics 365 version:
      2020 release wave 1 enabled
      Version 1710 (9.1.0.16251) online

    Recently attempted to install Visual Studio 2015 SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). Today's error was provided as follows:

      [0638:3524][2020-05-15T15:01:58]: Error 0x80070490: Failed to find expected public key in certificate chain.
      [0638:3524][2020-05-15T15:01:58]: Error 0x80070490: Failed to verify expected payload against actual certificate chain.

    I have attached the log files for more details.

    Other times, it was related to broken links that resulted in 404 status. This was even after I attempted an install on updated version downloaded from Microsoft.

    I have also attempted Report Builder. I fails to allow us to connect to the cloud version of Dynamics 365.

    Also last update I attempted with Visual Studio SSDT 2017, cloud connections were forbidden as well.

    Thanks in Advance

    Rodrick,
    For Dynamics 365 Online, you will need to use Visual 2015 and then install the Report authoring extension. The report authoring extension isn't available for Visual Studio 2017 or later so don't bother with those versions.

    The error logs suggest some sort of network communication issue when the install tries to install additional components.

    You could try downloading the ISO image from this location https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/mt186501(v=msdn.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN (look towards the bottom of the page) and installing from the ISO.

    Thank you! So far the ISO worked. Maybe because everything was packaged in the download.

    @Rodrick Hales,

    Microsoft appears to be moving away from SSRS as a reporting tool. We strongly recommend using one of the other available reporting options available with D365 Online whenever possible:

    * Views (now more configurable than in the past)
    * Charts
    * Dashboards
    * Excel integration
    * Power BI
    * PCF controls (check out https://pcf.gallery)

    Like you, many of our clients still have legacy reports in SSRS that we're helping to maintain, but it's a great time to begin moving those to other formats whenever possible.

    @Geoff Ables,

    Should Microsoft recently releasing the T-SQL CDS endpoint give any hope that they might allow SSRS to continue to be used for reporting? Hopefully this was the reason they were not moving forward with the reporting extension beyond VS 2015 and the data query limitations of FetchXML?

    Thoughts?

    Hello Scott. I gave this a shot from SQL Server Management Studio 18. The login failed. Would you know if this works for GCC or GCC High? We use DUO for MFA.

    Rodrick,

    T-SQL for CDS is currently just in preview for commercial use. GCC and GCC-H availability lag behind the general release of features for commercial use so it is going to be a while if they release it at all in Gov Cloud.
