1.  Editable Grids in CRM 2016

Posted 29 days ago
We have been looking at a few add-on solutions for this but learned recently that this is out of the box in CRM 2016.  Has anyone been successful in adding this control and having it work?  I can add the control, but all of the fields are locked in the grid view and unable to be edited.  They are not all read-only fields or locked on the form; so I can't figure out why I cannot edit any of them.

Along that line, does anyone have a recommendation for an add-on for this?

We are on CRM 2016 on premise.  Thanks!

Hi Toni-

I've played around with Editable Grids a bit and was able to get them to work.  Not sure why your fields would all be locked, but this blog may help walk you through how to set it up and use the features that comes with Editable Grids.

Toni,

I have CRM 2016 SP1 on premise and use an add-in by Busiplanit.  You get one grid for free and unlimited grids with a purchased license.  I used the free grid for a POC and went to production with it.  It didn't take long for us to need more so, we purchased it.

The primary use for us it to allow Users to import csv files directly into the grid without needing import privileges.  I'm also in the middle of another POC to put Notes and Posts into grids on our Case main form.  If you have used Notes and especially Posts, getting them into a grid is no small task, 10 minute job with this product.  (only thing I'm working with them on is being able to add a new note or post from the grid)

I'm not sure of the capabilities of the CRM 2016 OOB editable grids but Busiplanit is worth a try.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim

Very interested in what you are saying about importing csv.  Can I trouble you to elaborate on the usage of this solution, and what exactly do you mean by importing csv.

Toni,

Editable Grids don't 'respect' form level read only settings so that can be taken off the list as a possible issue.

Hi Toni,

Good morning.  I have used 'AbleGrid' and 'D CRM Editable Grid'.  AbleGrid is very customizable, powerful and available for purchase.   DCRM EG is free and available here:

https://github.com/mehrgithub/dcrmeg

However, I really like the DCRM EG.  Depending on your needs, it is powerful and great value at $0.    I hope this helps you some.

Toni,

With the Busiplanit solution, I create the editable grid and in the definition of the grid I can say if import is allowed yes/no.  If yes, in the grid header there is an import function, simply browse to any csv file and it will import the values into the grid.  There is a 900 record limit and it does not perform lookups, I have not tried more than 50 records and have not tried importing into a lookup field so, not sure what will happen if you try.  I believe workflows will fire when the data is saved.

It matches on column name and is extremely fast, all dirty field values are green so you can easily see what has not been saved.  In the grid header is a save button.  I don't think the ribbon buttons save and save/close will save the grid data but, I think the save in the lower right of the page works.  In any event, we just tell the Users to click the save button in the grid and there hasn't been any issues reported.

Hope this helps,

Jim

Where does it allow you to say that imports are allowed?

I'm having trouble finding it.  Would be a great feature for my clients!

I also have been using Busiplanit for about 2 years. They are very responsive and work with you to improve the grid so it works for your needs.  I work with Ali Hanif and he responds so quick, it's amazing. You can set up a grid for almost any entity and so much easier than the o.o.b. grid with Dynamics 365.  You can even do a tiered grid to show related entities (not free, but not expensive at all)

Jensen, If you set AutoSave = No there will be an option to set allow import button = yes in the grid configuration.  Let me know if you have any trouble.  You can visit the blog that Tim linked in his post to download the grid.  It has my contact information in there.

Thanks for the responses, everyone.  I have determined through research that Microsoft needs more time to fine tune their editable grids solution, and there is minimal knowledge or support for the solution.  I'm really looking for an editable grid solution that adds a grid to any view or subgrid without having to create the grid from scratch.  Anyone know of a solution that does that?  Thanks!

Toni,

I can help you with our Busiplanit Editable Grid solution.  Have you downloaded and configured it?  Please contact me directly at ahanif@microplanit.com and I'm sure we can get through any issue you are seeing.

Our grid can go in as a subgrid on a from or you can a grid to a dashboard.
