1.  Gender Neutral - how are you handling it?

Good morning everyone

The thorny issue of allocating Gender Neutral has raised it's head again.  We currently collect Female/Male and it is mandatory on our contacts, allowing us to produce really good diversity stats.  But applying Gender Neutral will be required soon and I wondered if anyone out there in CRMland has got a good policy they can share?

Many thanks
Jules

How is this gathered? The field is a standard option set, so it's easy to add a "Gender Neutral" option. It could still be mandatory, and default to not assigned, so the user has to select an option. Is this more of a policy issue rather than a technical one?

Hi Tom

Yes I think this is more of a policy issue than a technical one.  My technical suggestion was simply to add Gender Neutral and Other to the options, Other to avoid those lazy users who would end up assigning GN to contacts they don't know the gender of.

I was hoping someone had already got a policy for how they deal with it.

I found this article to be really helpful: Asking about gender on online forms

Asking about gender on online forms
Again, where possible, set the check-multiple-options field to shuffle the order in which the options are displayed to avoid the appearance of hierarchy. Make sure that the form allows every user to check as many options as they need. The ability to check multiple options is important for many people.

Also, our team has a staff person tasked with work related to diversity and inclusion. I'll give them a shout to see if they have any other thoughts.

Excellent article thank you Peter.  It's much more complicated that we originally thought!  If your diversity specialist has any other tips they would be much appreciated.  We did have a diversity person but he left and I hear he did look at the issue a little while back but gave up... perhaps I'll throw this to his replacement, when they start.
