On-premise to online migration

Does the On-premise to online migration preserve the guids of the entity records? Or do they get recreated in the process?

I read this article and wonder if the same thing applies to entity records.

The OOB roles do change their GUID on each and every Dynamics instance — form access control however still works, thanks to the help of Security Role Templates! Also, if you have an organisational structure, all roles are replicated in the child Business Units. Obviously, each time with a different GUID. So, any automation or synchronisation which transfers for example team settings, should not hastily just use the GUIDs — even though they are used internally for the association!

    Thanks!

It all depends on how you migrate.

If you use a tool like KingswaySoft then GUIDs are maintained for entity records(accounts, contacts, etc).
However, as you point out for some record types, it is not possible to migrate the GUID, such as user records.

    Thanks Feridun.

Is there a list where we can reference which entity's guid gets preserved? Does the same apply to sandbox instance production copy?

I'm not aware of a list as such.
For a copy made using the admin center - I would expect all GUIDs to be preserved because the copy is done as a SQL backup and restore. But please do check this.

    Hi Rex,

As Feridun has replied it is possible to preserve GUID's during a migration. Additionally, you can preserve create dates; however, unless you create a custom field I don't believe you can preserve the source systems ModifiedOn date.

If you need help with migration we have an application designed to migrate data from On-Premise to On-Line.

Please feel free to contact us should this be relevant?

Microsoft has the FASTTRACK team for customers with over 250 users, so they are very knowledgeable on the process.  You should check with your MS rep to see if there is a guideline available.

    Hi Rex,
I'm looking for a list but I expect there isn't one. When we do migrations to Online, today we are either using an ETL tool (Scribe or KWS) or the Lifecycle Services tool the FastTrack team has created (we use it ourselves, no user limit for us).  Both will allow you to keep GUID values for entities (when using Scribe/KWS you can simply pass it across in your create and it stays) but the FastTrack tool essentially uploads a copy of your database and keeps a lot more data.  That said, I expect things like users and security roles may get updated anyway as a method to avoid accidentally impacting security across environments.  The FastTrack tool I expect would be similar to a database backup/restore and load via Deployment Manager as you would do on-prem, so if those values update there, they'd update in the migration online.
