Disable Skype Click-to-Call Links

    CRMUG,

    I am wrapping up regression testing for the version 9 upgrade, and I noticed the phone fields now have a Skype click-to-call hyperlink.  We are not currently using Skype, and I have not been able to find a way to disable this in the system.  Here are a couple notes:

    • In the System Settings > General tab, there is a "Set the telephony provider" section which allows me to toggle between (1) Skype and (2) Skype for Business / Lync, but there is no off option.
    • I do not see any browser add-ons creating th links.
    • All the (older) javascript solutions I found online do not appear to work.

    I just want this to appear as text and would prefer not duplicating the values to a text-only field (as some have suggested in other forums).

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hi Kyle,

    To disable click Settings > Administration > System Settings and on the General tab, Set the IM presence option to Yes or No.

    I toggled the Enable presence for the system option to Yes and No, but in both cases, the phone numbers were active links.  I restarted my browser, cleared my cache, logged in as system administrator and base users, but nothing seems to work.  Am I missing something?

    Could this is be a protocol setting in windows?

    Default App Settings -> Choose Default Apps by Protocol -> and the protocol Tel: is that set to skype?

    I thought the same thing earlier.  There is nothing set as a default for the TEL protocol though (screenshot below).  Could it be referencing a different protocol?

    Hmm, I'm not sure because we are working on trying to get it turned on (with Jabber) but I'm sure I'll know in a couple months.

    Maybe googling how to set it up may help you take it down.

    Let me know how it goes because I'm interested in what works for you.

    Quick update.  Microsoft responded with the following:

    From your ticket description, it looks like you are looking for an option to disable the Click-To-Call (CTC) option for Phone number fields in CRM. We are sorry to inform you that currently, you don't have an option to disable this in CRM directly. A suggestion for the same has been logged in our MS idea portal so that it will be considered for future development based on its priority.

    As you had found in some blogs already, you may have to use any script or business rule to copy the phone number value to a normal text field in order to disable this feature currently. Since there is no pending action from our end, please confirm if I may proceed with case closure. Kindly revert in case of any further queries.

    There are multiple "ideas" out there to remedy this design defect, but since a couple have been out there for 4+ years, I am not holding my breath.  If anyone is interested in up-voting an idea, I used this one:

    https://experience.dynamics.com/ideas/idea/?ideaid=0d19ba18-131a-e611-80e2-c4346badc228

    I have played with a couple solutions found in other posts, but none seem to work in version 9 (online).  I will see how much push back I get from our users.  If anyone has any other suggestions, I would be more than happy to test in my instance.

    Thanks!

    That's great to know - I'll keep that in mind as we look to spin it up.

    We enabled yammer integration and cannot turn that off either.

    I remember coming across something like this before in a non-Dynamics scenario.

    Iirc, this has to do with the Skype Click to Call client being installed on your machine and has nothing to do with the site you are seeing it on.
    The way to tell if this is the case is if phone numbers on other sites have the same annoying skype branding.

    See https://techdows.com/2012/10/disable-or-uninstall-skype-click-to-call.html for more info.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Donal.  Unfortunately, I do not have any extensions, and I could not find a Skype for Business setting like the link describes.  We ended up putting a function on the form which overrides the link with a more transparent alert:

    function overrideCTC() {
    	parent.Mscrm.ReadFormUtilities.openPhoneClient = function(phoneNumber) {
    		alert('Click to Call is currently disabled');
    		return false;
    	}
    }
