Solution cannot be found

I am attempting to upgrade v8.2 on-premise to 9.0.3, but receive an error about a missing solution:

Solution with Id = (the big long guid) does not exist.

From my digging around, I can see there was a solution that used to be installed a long time ago did not fully uninstall. How can I remove these leftover bits so I can successfully upgrade to v9?

    Thanks.

    Hi Joe,

Out of curiosity, have you checked the [SolutionBase] table with that GUID?  If it's in the table but not in the CRM UI for solutions you might be able to delete the record via SQL to get around it.  Just a guess; I haven't run into this before.

    Hi Kyle-

It is not in the SolutionBase table. And of course, not showing in the Solutions screen in the UI.

I have been attempting to see if I can delete the leftovers via SQL in my test environment, but every time I try, I end up destroying my test environment.

    It was fun at first...

    Thank you for the suggestion.

Hi @Joseph C. Markovich, do you know if the missing solution is managed or unmanaged?  Do you have the original zip file for the solution to try and re-install it to then do a full delete?

    Hi Joseph,

It may be possible to try something else here. We used to have situations where we needed to import customisations to an upgraded environment but had dependencies on incompatible old solutions so couldnt move the solution across.

It's entirely unsupported but if you exported the default solution, extracted the zip file and had a look through the 3 main xml files, you can possibly find some of the bits of this solution hanging about (search on GUID etc). I am pretty sure there were numerous links between the customisations and solution xml files. You can then chop stuff out, re-save and re-zip.
In my scenario, it was then possible to import the doctored solution (after MANY attempts and digging more and more lines out (an xml file tells you where the import is failing)) to a cleanly installed new version as i had cut the dependencies to the old solutions out.

In your scenario, importing the doctored solution back into the same environment to then upgrade it possibly wont work though. Still might help find the bad bits to consider your next move.

Goes without saying, importing a doctored solution anywhere risks breaking stuff. I only ever used this to get customisations across versions for testing. Wouldnt trust it beyond that.
