Something like Social Pane but isn't

Hi everyone! A post that I saw today from Robert got my mind churning on a problem that we have that we can't seem to solve...

What we're trying to do is allow staff to edit in a serialized fashion notes / reviews on a record. However, we don't want them to be able to edit anything else in the record. We thought initially the Social Pane would be perfect for this as it allows notes to be entered in like posts and they can share their thoughts. Problem is that there are no permissions available (that I have found) to allow editing of social pane but nothing else.

Does anyone know of a solution or some other fancy footwork that acts like the social pane / leave a review type thing that would work for this?  We're running 8.2 on prem.

    Gretchen -

If I am understanding the situation correctly, this should work as long as they have append permissions for the entity - when you create notes or activities for a record, you are appending them to that record.

    Hi Jill! =)

That's the kicker. We don't want them editing anything on the record except for this one space or something like it. If we give them append, won't that allow them to add to anything anywhere on the record?  We were hoping just to do field level security as another option, but there doesn't seem to be any permissions at all with the social pane. :P

You would need to test to be certain, but you would need write access to edit the entity record to make changes to any of the fields n the record.  For example, if you are working with the account record, I think you could use a security role that allows for read and append on the Account record, but not write permissions.  I think this should allow the user to add notes and activity to the account because the notes and activity are creating records in other entities and only appending to the Account entity.
