Online storage vs performance KPI

    Hello,

We have had a question pop up about that I cannot seem to find any answer for about storage vs performance. We are not currently using much storage but we are in the process of bringing on quite a few more users which could cause a swell in storage used. I was wondering if anyone has experienced or happens to know if there is a certain amount of storage used before there is any impact on performance for online instances?

    Thanks!

I'd say that is more or less impossible to answer. The online service is managed by Microsoft and they have all sorts of monitoring tools to scale out capacity as demand increases. I would say that the amount of data you have doesn't directly affect performance. But the usage pattern is probably more relevant. For example, compare if you have a few users with a high level of transactions (creating lots of quotes, orders etc) versus a larger number of users who ocassionally look at an account record - which has the higher impact on performance?

You haven't quoted any numbers but I've seen systems with a couple of hundred users and around 100Gbytes data that respond well. And there are customers with much larger numbers of users and data.

You are also at the mercy of other D365 customers who happen to share the servers that your service is hosted on. If they all start to do intensive stuff then performance might suffer for you. But Microsoft has introduced throttling limits to reduce the risks of this.

I think what I'm saying is don't worry, keep adding users!

    Joshua,

Our organization has thousands of users and well over 150GB of storage used.  There isn't an association of storage to performance – they are addressing 2 different elements of the system.  We also are running in an Online instance of Dynamics and use both local storage (inside Dynamics) and sharepoint storage in the system.  Neither storage types affect performance.  From a cost perspective the sharepoint online storage is lower per gigabyte and allows for additional management capabilities vs. the internal Dynamics storage.
