Recommendations to handle subscription based products

    Hi there,

Our organization recently installed D365 Sales and BC and we are looking to offer a more expanded product portfolio with subscription based products. We would go with BC, but it looks like our entire sales staff would need a BC license as they must be able to see some of the subscription details such as invoices and statements. That option is cost prohibitive and likely will not work. We also looked at a 3rd party offering from Abakion. It looks great from a feature perspective but again we would prefer a cheaper option.

I'm curious if others have had to put in place a subscription model and if so what solution did you go with? Or did you develop something custom? If so can you tell me what you did?

    Thanks,
    Keith

    Hi Keith,

For me the first question would be which system is going to be generating the payment requests for the subscriptions. Essentially you have a number of scenarios.

    1. Dynamics generates the requests. This could be by means of a custom entity which are then fed into an accounting package.
    2. You use some middleware to generate the subscription requests.
    3. Your account package can handle subscriptions and the schedule is setup head of time.

I have worked on scenarios 1 and 3 and in my experience it is more to do with how comfortable the senior management are with the proposal and which meets the requirement of the auditing teams to which one you pick.

This is very high level but I hope it helps.

    Hi Jon,

Thanks for the response. I am thinking the most logical place to generate payment requests would be the BC system. Do you know if BC can handle subscription based products?

    Hi Keith

I am don't have any experience with BC so I am afraid I can't really help you there.

    Regards
    Jon
