Connections - Knowing To / From in Advanced Find

  • 1.  Connections - Knowing To / From in Advanced Find

My company is moving towards using Connections a great deal to link between multiple types of entities.  My question is how do I know what entity is the to and what is the from when doing an advanced find?  How is this decided?  I have looked at the SQL tables and cannot figure out how this is being done.  I've experimented with different entry methods (connect account to contact from account with no role then connect a contact to account with no role... same results).

How do I explain to my end users how to know if they should pick To or From when I pretty much find out by just trial and error?

If you set up a reciprocal connection, then the system will automatically create the connection in the other direction. That way in advanced find you can look for connections with a certain role and don't have to worry about direction. If you don't want a reciprocal connection, then I think you would want to establish a standard for which entity should be the from and which should be the to. When using code to examine or work with connections there are "Record1" and "Record2" fields.

    Let's follow an example:

I have a Help Desk Ticketing Table.  The User can associate "Orders" to to it through Connections.  Though in reality we have Code to select Orders and then Click on a Ribbon Button to create the Ticket and associate all of the selected Records in the Ticket using Connections

In my Advanced FInd, in order to get the Orders associated to the Ticket, I need to start with the Connect To.  Then Choose the Connected From and then reference the record inside the Connected From.  In my instance it is the Help Desk Request.

When you run the Advanced FInd you will see the Result

It is Reciprocal.  I could have started with Connected From and then chosen Connected To
