Creating a contact while creating another record

We have a custom entity that can be created for various reasons.  While creating they indicate the client and contact.  If the contact does nto exist, they see the + and the option to create the contact, but when doing so, it pops up the box and says that there are unsaved changes and we have to save and continue or discard changes.

The problem is that the contact is a required field, so even if they had populated all the other requited fields, they cant save this record until the contact is added, which does not yet exist.

Has anyone overcome this issue? It is a pain for them to start to create a record, realize their contact is not there and then to have to close out, create the record and start again with the creation of the custom entity.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Laura

Laura, do you know if you have the quick create form turned on for contact records?  I've had nested create records pop up on top of each other before as long as all forms are available to the user.

@Jonathan Blackham we do not use the quick create form because we require linkage to a client and location record and it does not work with the quick create.  So, do i need to update something to make this work?  We do have a system admin form that not al users have access to - could that cause a problem?

    Hi Laura,

When you say that you 'require linkage to a client and location record and it does not work with the quick create', what do you mean exactly?
Lookups should work in the quick create form.

Laura, one option would be to only make the Contact field a required field once the Created On field for the record contains data.  This can be accomplished with a Business Rule.  What this allows the user to do is save the main record, since the Contact field isn't required (yet), and immediately upon saving, the Contact field becomes required.  The + option should, at that point, allow you to create the Contact record, reference it, and then save the custom entities' record.  If the custom entity and the Contact entities share some fields, entity-to-entity mapping should also populate the fields to the new Contact record created.

You would need to try it to determine if the user experience is acceptable, but it is a quick business rule to set up.

@Laura Mortick, if you enable quick create forms for all record types then you will have the cascading/nested quick create forms experience I mentioned.  If you have to create a dozen related records then you will sequentially have another record form pop up on top of the form you are looking at to create the new dependent record you need. You will then close out of them as you complete them and you won't have the navigation/save error message.

Thank you so much! We are working through this now.  A while ago (many years i think) the quick create forms were more limited. I guess I have not re-visited them in a long time.  Thank you @Jonathan Blackham and @Donal McCarthy!

@Jim Lorrig thank you for your suggestion as well. We may give that a try if we can't get it to work with the quick create forms.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

    Hi guys,

I have another one along these lines for you. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Our helpdesk use Cases. When the Contact they want to add does not exist if they go to add a new Contact they have to link in the Company manually. I would like to set this so that CRM knows if I am creating a Contact from a Case to take the 'Customer' field as the Company and add that into the create form.

How can I get it to auto fill the Company Name?
