Can workflows, business processes, custom views/forms/entities be migrated from CRM on premise to 365 online?
Or must they all be re-created in the new environment manually from scratch?

You can create a solution file and add all your features into that. Then you export the solution file from your on-prem system and import it into D365 CE on-line...but it depends on which version you have on-prem: Solution Version Compatibility Matrix – Dynamics CRM 2013 (6.0) – Dynamics 365 (8.2)

If that is not an option for you, then you should probably create it over again from scratch. I know we have assisted clients with upgrading their on-prem system to a point where they could export a compatible solution, but with so many new features in D365 CE on-line (as compared with older on-prem CRM versions) that most times it does not make sense to migrate code for a feature that is supported OOTB.

    Hi @Rod Carlson,

The ease of importing existing customisations will differ depending on which On Premise version you are on.

We are hoping to embark on the journey to the Cloud from 8.2 in the new year. I'll be putting forward a phased departmental approach which will allow us to refine the process as we go, instead of taking the same old sh!t with us so to speak. So for us, we will be mostly re-creating in the new environment as will use this as an opportunity to tidy our CRM and processes.
Guess it depends on budget, available time and experience. I intend to use our Development / Support partner to do the majority of the work. It will be like we've got a whole new CRM! (hopefully).
I would suggest you discuss your options with your Development / Support partners (if you have one).

    Hi Rod,
We migrated from CRM 2011 to D365 online by the following approach:
We setup two sandbox environments on-premise with CRM 2013 and CRM 2015 (there was a reason why we did not migrate from CRM 2013 into D365 8.2 online directly at that time, but I can't remember).
We included all necessary customizations (entities, forms, views) and some workflows into a solution file in CRM 2011. We needed to do some tweaking to a couple of relationships before we could import the solution file into CRM 2013. Then we exported the same solution file from CRM 2013 to CRM 2015 and from CRM 2015 to D365 finally. This worked like a treat. So, if you are on CRM 2013 or later, give it a try to migrate using the solution file directly.
When it came to plugins and scripts, we developed these from scratch in D365 online because there have been so many changes in terms of API from CRM 2011 to D365 online and we wanted to take advantage that this was the only way to perform this task. We also migrated our scripts to TypeScript instead of plain JavaScript to allow for less data volume and better maintainability.
    Best regards
    Hauke

    Hi Rod,

we migrated our two companies with separate CRMs from 8.2 OnPrem to the Cloud with Microsoft FastTrack.
You should contact your MS representative, if they can offer that program to you (it depends on how many licenses you have).
FastTrack does not had a price-tag at the time, but that might also differ from region to region and also from customer to customer.
You then make a backup of your SQL-OnPrem-server and upload it to Azure. Then the MS-FastTrack-tool takes over and converts your database into an Dynamics Online instance. It was pretty painless for us. So there was no need to download and upload solutions manually. It also migrates all personal views of users and also maintains all creation and change dates. I can highly recommend it and we would also have paid for it (if that would have been possible).

After we migrated our Dev to the cloud we started with adding customizations in the cloud in a separate solution to account for the cloud changes, e.g. replacing dialogues with workflows. During the go-live we then uploaded our prod-SQL-backup and afterwards imported the 'cloud-delta-solution' we created in the cloud form Dev to Prod.

I am pretty sure that creating everything from scratch would have taken much more time.
    Regards,
    Johannes
