Changing pick list values - what breaks?

I have a couple of pick-lists that have building locations as their values. I have workflows that trigger based on these values... (ie, if L1 is selected, email L1 supervisors group.)

If I rename (not delete) the value of L1 to Floor 1, does this change propagate to the workflows or do I have to rebuild my workflows that call the value L1 and update them to make them happy and execute? I realllly don't want to try this and see what happens for fear of how many tendrils might go sideways. :P

So what's been your experience? :)

    (oh! if it's helpful, we're on prem 8.52) :)

In my experience, you can change the pick list values without impact as long as references are on the full value.  The only place I can think of where it could be an issue is if you have a criteria in a view, business rule or workflow that looked for part of the text in the field...like if you have a view with a criteria that looked for the value of that field beginning with L or containing 1.  You can check the dependencies on any field that uses the option set to consider all the places it is used to be sure none would have an impact.  As long as all your criteria use the equals operator you should be fine!

One thing to look for is any plugin code that may reference the text rather than numeric values of the optionset. Look for entityname.FormattedValues["fieldname"]

I would 2nd the other recommendation here.  As long as you are not changing the underlying numeric values for the options and just changing the 'label', you should be fine.  Double check anything that might be referencing the label just to be safe.

As an aside, do you not have a development/test environment that you can do this work in before changing in Production?  If not, I think everyone here would agree that you should set that up.  :-)

    Good luck!

    Thanks everyone!

We do have a dev environment but it doesn't match what is in Test atm. It's been the playground to figure out how in the world do we do X without breaking anything. I don't have anything that calls for partials - so it's always been the full value. I'll set up email again in Dev and try there to make sure it plays nice - just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to make everything go completely sideways if I changed the values within the field itself. :) Thanks for your advice - I appreciate it!
