The future of D365 On-Premises

  • 1.  The future of D365 On-Premises

    Hi everyone. I've been a member of the CRMUG for over a years but haven't engaged much. I feel a little over my head to be honest. But, it's clear to me that our company is committed and management is wanting more out of it, so it's time to step up my game.

    We are currently on Version 1612 (8.2.5.4) (DB 8.2.5.4) On-premises. I just saw the post about the web client being discontinued in October 2020 and need to find out what that means for us. I'm reading the information about the Unified Interface but I guess most importantly I'm wondering two things...
    1. Does that mean we need to convert to hosted/online?
    2. What is going to happen to all our business processes and workflows (of which we have LOTS!)?

    I'm not even sure where to start to get information or develop a plan. I don't want to put it on the back burner and then suddenly have to make a transition. So, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, etc.

    Hi Nanci,

    We all feel that way at different times and about different things, don't worry :)

    Here's my advice, although I'm sure many others will have even better input.

    • I am not sure how Microsoft will handle the Unified Interface going forward with on-premises environments.  I'm interested to see what other's know about this.
    • Get a partner!  You will get a lot of good information here.  However, having a partner is a sure-fire way to feel confident that you are going down the right path for your company's needs and future-proofing your Dynamics application(s)
    • Your workflows and business process flows should be fine if you migrate to the cloud.  Of course there will be some pre-work and some testing involved but you do not need to move to Microsoft Flow just yet if you are not ready.  Just look at it as an opportunity to learn new, exciting, and efficient ways of doing things.

    The announcement about the unified interface does not mean that you must convert to hosted/online.  Microsoft has not deprecated the On-Premises edition and in my opinion won't for a while yet. What the plan is for the unified interface in on-premises I don't think has been released yet.

    If you think that you will one day migrate to Online then why not sign up for a 30-day trial and start having a look around?

    ​Unified Interface is already available in v9 of on-premise but you're stuck behind the same walls such as "no dialog support".

    The joys of online means you get updates regularly to the user interface whilst on-premise historically lags behind. I think my current estimate is the on premise UCI is at the same stage the online UCI was around a year ago.

    We are an on premise customer and we are also an ISV meaning we try and support old interfaces and new so I'm pretty up to date on this area so feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions.

    The important thing is you're on-premise which means you don't have any rush (unless you want new features).

    Yes, I agree with Zarko's last comment.

    There have been several announcements lately that give me some cause for concern.  The API Limits have been tightened twice in the past, but this latest announcement of an API Cap (going over costs extra) will significantly increase our integration costs.

    Next who can forget the earlier announcement of storage cost increases from $5/GB to $40/GB for everything except Attachments and Logs (Logs are $2/GB over a microscopic 2GB allowance)?

    And lastly, I came across a potential bombshell regarding D365 CE licensing.  It appears we have to pay extra for Field Service and PSA instead of being bundled (as it is today) into our CE license.

    Concerned by these announcements, I have been researching paths back to an On Premise setup to insulate from the flurry of cost increases.  I suspect much of it comes down to each customer's new pricing when licenses come up for renewal.  For me lately, I have been apprehensive recommending migrating any new systems over to the online platform (D365 CE, CDS, PowerApps, Flow, etc.) until I can get some clarification on the new licensing and pricing changes.

    Hi Nanci,
    Since you are on-premises, realistically you never have to change or update - ever!  =)  While that's probably not the best path for the future, it does give you some flexibility on timing, and gives you the capability to either wait and see, take a bit longer to convert, or do whatever is best for your company.  I will say that getting online is probably the best idea long-term - as others have pointed out, that's where you see the features, all the new capabilities, and in an ever-expanding number of cases, functionality that just won't ever make it on-prem (see some of the AI capabilities, for example).  But also keep in mind that deprecation simply means Microsoft will stop providing updates for it, and for on-prem customers it really means nothing at all, since you have full control of when you upgrade to a new version.

    What I will add, however, is that the new UI really is better in a number of ways - it's fast, looks better (I feel), and is responsive across devices, which really helps reduce extra configuration time.  I think after the initial learning curve, we're all going to look back on the days of the classic web UI as the dark times before the Dynamics UI really became useful.

    Finally, as Ben mentions - talk to a partner, it is exactly what we're here for!
