    Hi all

I go away for a week and come back to find MS, in their wisdom, have disabled the regional discovery service.  This means I can no longer create or update any SSRS reports in VS; XRMToolbox is no longer working; and all sorts of other things I can't bring myself to talk about.

Does anyone have a simple solution for this?  The team have been trying to fix it while I was away but to no avail and I'm none the wiser.

    Anyone can help please!

    Cheers
    Jules

    Hi Julia,

Not sure about your SSRS reports in VS, but for XRM Toolbox resolving the issue is straightforward.

Create a new connection, when doing this select 'SDK login control'

Then select 'Open Sdk Login Control':

select relevant options for on prem versus O365, select your environment and away you go.

    Hope this helps

Hi @Julia Streatfield, no simple answer I'm afraid. We've been affected badly by this change and our partner (Trillium) have been working hard on getting our various integrations back up. Mostly sorted now (a week later) but they still have an issue with scribe ... so at least I can confirm you're not alone!

Hi - we have the same problem with SSRS report building for Dynamics 365 online since the regional discovery service was turned off.  We have been able to get our other tools (XRMToolbox, SCRIBE Insight, SCRIBE Replication, SSIS/Kingswaysoft working from updated drivers for SCRIBE and Kingswaysoft) but thus far have not found a winning combination to connect from SSRS for building reports that use FETCHXML.  Part of the issue is that Microsoft has not updated the BIDS and other Authentication components to work with newer versions of VS (we still use 2012 as the latest version as we can't find and download 2015 VS nor the appropriate extra components) and that is just unacceptable.  I will be raising a ticket with Microsoft on this as it impacts our ability to service the needs of our organization and likely they will have some solution that requires other tools that we don't have installed in order to try it - so a week or more will be shot in this endeavor.  We all recognize that Microsoft would prefer we use Power BI to build reports but it simply doesn't offer some of the types of views that our users need, the learning curve is steep, and worst of all it isn't going against REALTIME Dataverse data which defeats the purpose of what our users need - reports that show what just changed seconds ago, not hours or days ago.

IF ANYONE finds a connection string secret handshake that might work please post it - but be specific to SSRS - we know how to make other tools connect.  Thanks for reading my rant but one of y'all has to have the secret sauce here.

Microsoft have updated SSDT which fixed my SSRS woes about a couple of months ago, it's worth upgrading to the latest version if you're using the 2015 version Download SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) - SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) | Microsoft Docs

Found a post late yesterday that if you follow the instructions you CAN get VS 2017 and VS 2019 to work with FETCHXML and connect even with the recent change to the regional discovery service.  It is a great step by step post from Nick Doelman on January 2021

Set Up Your Workstation to Create SSRS Reports for Dataverse, Model-Driven Power Apps and Dynamics 365 – ReadyXRM

Depending upon your authentication requirements (we use AD) the settings may require that you change your signin to specify "Don't Know" so that the global discovery service returns back all of your instances from which to choose when signing in during development.

    Hello everyone

Thanks everyone for responses and help - it's good to know it's not just me!

We've had some success in the last 24 hours and I'm happy to post our findings here.

We have two servers running SSRS - our original one, running VS2015, and a new one, also acting as the report server, running VS2019.

To get server 1 up and running I had to uninstall any reference to other VS versions, plus the report authoring tool.  The latest report authoring too was then installed (link here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56973&ranMID=24542&ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-nt2w4U.9xgwSa0zyNuOZeA&epi=TnL5HPStwNw-nt2w4U.9xgwSa0zyNuOZeA&irgwc=1&OCID=AID2000142_aff_7593_1243925&tduid=%28ir__xyn2n63odckfqzyfkk0sohzzz32xuvou29c99zkn00%29%287593%29%281243925%29%28TnL5HPStwNw-nt2w4U.9xgwSa0zyNuOZeA%29%28%29&irclickid=_xyn2n63odckfqzyfkk0sohzzz32xuvou29c99zkn00).  The account whose credentials I run all reports under has a password that doesn't run out and isn't subject to extra authentication.

To get server 2 up and running we updated all software to the latest versions of Report Authoring Extension, SQL Server 2019, Reporting Services (v15.0.7765.17516), Visual Studio 2019.  On a data source, I still use the Fetch connection but the connection string has changed to http://xyz.crm4.dynamics.com; and then the Unique Name for your instance (Advanced Settings/Customisations).  That enabled me to use more up-to-date SSRS with Fetch.  For some reason Deploy isn't working but I can do without that for the moment.

Another useful tip I've had in the past week; you can now use sql server management studio to query your online CRM direct.  Here's the link https://dynamics-chronicles.com/article/how-access-dynamics-365-online-sql-server-database,  Now, if only we could grab that into SSRS...

Hope all the above is useful; have a great weekend everyone.

    Cheer
    Jules
