    Hello,

I am hoping to see what people think for Organizations in PSA. We are setting up PSA. Going through training material, I see a lot of people use Organization as a location. Reading the materials I see it does not need to be the same as the Business Units.  It also can be used for technical functions from another article.

Our Accounting department uses classes and has the classes as  Product sales, DIT labor, and AIT labor.  DIT and AIT are service departments.  In general service departments and tasks are separate and maybe a resource crosses projects here and there. We might have a future service that could make that happen more often. Seems like those resources can be setup to track accross organizations.

I can see leaving us as one Organization and then setup categories that we use to break out the two service departments. The more I play with and adjust PSA it seems like setting the above classes as organizations might be a way to go.  This is my first setup of PSA so I am curious what others think.

    Thanks,

    Hi Brant
The use of Organizational Units or also known as Contract Units is to align with Cost Rates and intercompany cost tracking. Unless these untis have different costs for the same role I would instead use "teams" to split them out but its down to everyone preference.

For the intercompany effect say you have one project contract assigned to Organizational Unit A.  The system will seek the costs from the price list assigned to that Organizational Unit, but should they require a resource from another Organizational Unit say B then you will see Intercompany actuals posted in addition to the normal Cost and Unbilled Sales actuals.

Something to think about before you start to split one typical Organizational Unit into multiple sections for the purpose task grouping or filtering

Thank You, for the information on Organizational Units.  The two units do different work so roles, in general, will be different. There could be different prices for similar roles.  We could define different roles for each service department even if they were the same.  I will look into the Teams approach.

    Thank you,
