    Hello All,

I would like to document our Dynamics CRM servers better, to be prepared for disaster recovery. Could you please tell me if there is an article for Dynamics 2016 on premise that shows which files, configurations, settings, etc... should be backed up from the application server. We already back up the entire VM. Database backups are performed regularly. However, if we had to reinstall the software, it could get messy.

    Any advice?
    Thanks

The easiest thing would be to document any IFD configurations you have (if any), and then make sure you back up the CRM database itself.  You can do a full reinstall/restore on a vanilla server very quickly with those two pieces of information.

Thanks very much. I see many web sites showing how to install the IDF configuration but not how to document it or back it up.

Do you know of any? (This was installed and configured long before I came onto the scene.)

You're in luck, Microsoft has an ADFS rapid restore tool: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/operations/ad-fs-rapid-restore-tool

And a comment from an MS admin about which components matter for ADFS (which is the key part of an IFD deployment).

"ADFS key components: Certificate, AD containers, and the database. For the 1st one, make sure you have a backup of the SSL cert. For the second, ensure you properly backup AD. For the last one, if it is a WID database, a BMR backup of the ADFS server is just fine (note that it will also backup SSL certs' private keys). If you are using SQL, a SQL backup"

As you can see, it's not really about Dynamics per se.  It's more the core infrastructure that Dynamics would then use to run IFD.  As long as you have the Dynamics database, you can recover all the way down from raw metal, if you need.
