  • 1.  Permissions for Excel Online updates

    Posted Mar 17, 2021 07:47 AM

Hi. We're on D365 Online CE v9x unified interface.

I'm trying to create a security role to allow some users to use Export to Excel > Open in Excel Online to make changes to records and save them.

I've assigned all the permissions that appear to be required, but when attempting to save after amending in Excel Online, I get the following error:

The specified action can be called only once.

The specified action can be done only one time.

    Error code: 0x80040371Session Id: a6c296bc-6715-47ad-97d7-36c8b3e215b0Activity Id: a68840f7-0c82-4982-9e09-14f64b574755

Can anyone advise which permissions I have missed?

    I've assigned the following:

    • Export customisations
    • Import Job

    Core Records

    • Data Import
    • Data Map
    • Import Source File
    • Web Wizard
    • Web Wizard Access Privilege
    • Wizard Page

    They already have the following:

    Business Management

    • Bulk Edit

    • Read customizations
    • Read Entity
    • Read Field
    • Read Plug-in Assembly
    • Read Plug-in Type
    • Read Sdk Message
    • Read Sdk Message Processing Step
    • Read Sdk Message Processing Step image
    • Read Solution
    • Read View

Usually with permissions issues, the error can still be cryptic, but it usually contains the privilege the User GUID does not have.  I'm assuming this works if you are in the System Administrator role.  To begin, did you start the role by copying an existing system role and then make changes to the copy?  If not, do that.  Its a process that has been followed since the beginning of MS & CRM, not sure if it still needs to be done this way, but it was this way at one time.

One thing that I have done in the past if I could not find help on security issues is create a security role and just keep piling on privileges until the error stopped and then work back from there, so the User only have the privileges necessary to do their job (a concept MS has forgotten over the years).

Also, not sure what actions the Users are performing in excel but there are other tools, the editable grid in CRM works okay for some tasks and there is an editable grip product by busiplanit that we have been using for years, not sure if they are still in business, but it lets you edit data in a grid and import data without the User having to have export or import privileges.

    Hope this helps,
