    We are currently on version 8.1 on-prem and thinking about an upgrade.  We have dozens of integrations - SQL jobs, C# applications interacting with the CRM SDK and API, custom reports outside of CRM, etc.  Will Dynamics online allow us to interact directly (read + write) with the data?  I've heard mixed feedback about read-only access and the need to set up Azure servers.  If you can point me to any literature, I would love to bring it back to my management team.

    Hi Kyle,
    The short answer is yes, as long as you are using the API.  Once you move to Dynamics Online, you will no longer have direct access to the SQL database, which means you cannot interact with the data that way.  However, the API remains essentially the same (excepting updates between the versions of course) and all of your C# applications using the API will continue to be able to access it online.  People choose to set up separate Azure servers or use other data replication methods when they want or need that direct SQL access, either for reporting or other processes.  You can still build custom SSRS reports for Dynamics Online, but you must build the queries with FetchXML - T-SQL won't work.  Basically, if your current process is interacting directly with the CRM front-end servers and not asking for anything directly from your database server, it will be fine, but anything touching the database will need to be redesigned or you'll need to replicate.
