is there a way to create a business rule that will only populate the auto number field I created based on a field the user selects? I am probably setting it up wrong but I cant figure it out.
I only need the auto number to populate if the user selects 1 of 2 internal company names on the opp form. but if I try to set it up I think I am selecting the wrong trigger because I cant get the OPP ID to show up here.

Afaik, the only available trigger for auto-number is create.
If you want to increment a number based on a specific event, then flow is your best option.
In saying that, your event sounds a bit tricky - what are you actually trying to do?

thank you- I actually figured it out. I did have to create a flow to determine when that field would populate and also made it a random string of characters so now we are good.
I was over thinking it at first and then it made sense!

For a request like this where you are conditionally setting an autonumber on an given record the approach that I have used would not involve having the autonumber on the entity/table itself. Follow this approach:

    1. Create a separate table/entity (call this TABLE-NEW) that has a column (NEW_NUMBER) of type auto-number and set your seed number.
    2. Update your original table (call this TABLE-A) column that is currently auto-number to just a string field.  This will hold the unique value going forward.
    3. On your original table (call this TABLE-A) when the record is saved have that trigger a workflow that will:
      1. Look to see if the text field that used to hold the auto-number DOES NOT CONTAIN DATA – AND has one of the 2 permitted values in the other column(s) that you want to update.

                                                        i.     Create a new record in TABLE-NEW which will issue a new autonumber into NEW_NUMBER in the TABLE-NEW

ii.     Update your record in TABLE-A with the NEW_NUMBER from the TABLE-NEW record just created.

This workflow (or you could use flow if you want it to be more modern but not as timely)  does the conditional assignment from a separate table.
