I come to discover that the email template system of d365 is rather, shall we say, "limited" I can't even add a simple picture in the email template body. You cannot format things like datetime.

I want to start a project that would allow users to create more visually rich email templates. But I need to know first if this something that the community would want to have. If I get 100 likes to this post I will start the project.

Also, if there are features that you want please chime in. If it's not too hard I will add it.

    Planned features:
1.) Be able to add embedded pictures
2.) Be able to format datetime and numbers

    Format Conversions

    Cheers!

I guess I'm still trying to understand the use case for the OOB email templates. Since we started with Dynamics, we've always had a marketing automation platform. So all email creation was done through there. And ClickDimensions has these quick templates so people can send pre-approved marketing ones one-off, one record at a time.

Is there some value in using this feature if one already has something like this in place? We also now have Tellwise, which integrates with D365 to send off emails to people in a view.

@Rex Kenley Tan I'd love to use the product! I just got done trying to fix a broken image link in an email template (only took me 1.5 hours) :(
So frustrating!     @Brooke Browne We have to CC/BCC our call center agents on the automated appt confirmation emails we send to our providers/patients.  I can't find a way to do that with Click. Do you know if it's possible? Thank you

Ahh got it! I'll definitely keep tabs on your progress and see what the possibilities are with something like this. For now I don't think we will be using this feature any time soon.
@Tim Dailey - I definitely don't have a similar need but I can imagine that would be hard to do with CD. I don't recall any way to CC/BCC someone, unless you got clever with Flow somehow....

    @Brooke Browne@Sean O Malley

The use case is for crm users who want to do more with their email templates and don't have any 3rd party alternative.

The need for this became apparent from this discussion, Email Template - Editing Inserted Values
    https://www.crmug.com/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?GroupId=1285&MessageKey=0227a635-7c3d-4a5a-b2d1-da5cc3af52a6

So this project is for crm users like Sean, so he doesn't have to add fields just to have the correct display in his emails.

    Cheers!

    All

Here is a prototype of the project. The screen shot show the email template editor, the email created (on the right) and the email content (bottom left).

    Nelson
Once I finished, I will send you the link to the source code.

    Sean
This would also have the feature where you can customize the display of date and number fields.

Would also be very interested in this.
It is pretty astonishing that the email template editor has never worked satisfactorily and the fact that it has not changed an iota since pre-v4.0 is also mind blowing.

This is a date test. So now instead of having to create a custom field to display date time data in the desired format, just set it in the template.

Well it turns out that my original choice for the editor has issues with fonts and the documentation did not help. :(

But I was able to find a replacement and it turns out to be better. It is the same editor that this website uses. :)

    Hi Rex,

We're shortly started  a project in which we would like to send automated emails to clients. Because we don't have a marketing automation tool and the emails have to be 'presentable' we also run into the limited functionality of the email-template drawing tool.
On some fora we found a workaround: design the email into another tool and copy the html into the email-template. We run a few tests and indeed, its possible to get some main needs in your mail (like pics, links, coloured text..). But we haven't reached the end of the project so who knows, what will come up next..
But directly edit the email-template in Dynamics, is for me the prefered way to go. So I will following your 'experiment' to.

    YES!
Why are we this many years into the product and email templates are still so weak?
Are third-party marketing email providers paying Microsoft to not develop something? ;-)
Anyway, I would love the ability to embed images in emails and get some simple font formatting.
    Thank you!

I made a small update to support the v8 systems. The code will auto detect if it's v8 or v9 and make the appropriate calls.

Should be an easy to port to PCF. The react pcf framework is still in public release, but is stable enough.

How do you imagine this would work? My original design was a pop up window launched from the a ribbon bar button. Are you thinking of a button control that would pop up a dialog window inside the email form?

If sounds like you got some great advice on how to resolve your immediate Email template formatting issues.  But if you continue to have more complex email and document template requirements that require you to pull data buried deeper in Dynamics 365, check out our DocumentsCorePack add-on solution for Dynamics 365.  If you want to check it out, you can download a free trial from the MS AppSource store or through our mscrm-addons.com website.   Or if you would prefer to see a live overview, let me know and I can show it to you this week.

That does sound like an "intriguing" feature, being able to use a customized dataset (based on OData or FetchXml) with a template that process through it like looping through detailed sub records.

Something for me to chew on.
